Taj Taj Tandoori, Frankfurt

Indian food and beer

First Indian meal after India…not disappointed.

Since I’ve been back from India, I’ve been telling Ave about Indian food and how delicious it was in India. Compared to the variety of food in India, Germany and Canada Indian food is mainly associated with liquid “gravy” curries and quite meat heavy. Ave wanted to go for Indian food as well after I’ve talked about the greatness that is Indian cuisine.

There are plenty of Indian restaurants here in Frankfurt but I’m always questioning the authenticity of them. After a bit of research we decided to go to Taj Taj Tandoori, which was supposed to offer authentic Northern Indian fare in a posh setting.

We went there on a Sunday at 5 pm and we were the first guests to be there. We didn’t have a reservation, so in case Taj Taj Tandoori was full, we would simply go to another place around the Bahnhof (train station) area. Luckily, the place was not full and we were quickly seated. During our dinner we learned that the place was opened by a Pakistani, but that is very common in Germany, so I wasn’t too worried.

The meal

The drinks came first – the Kristal Weizen was the normal stuff and for some reason my chai lassi tasted like a Chinese red bean drink. Ave enjoyed the chai though…but for me, I think I’ll stick with good old mango lassi in the future.

Chicken tikka

The sizzling of my chicken tikka was hypnotizing when it came to the table. The pieces of chicken were definitely succulent and grilled to perfection.

Lamb vindaloo

Ave’s lamb vindaloo was also good, but this felt like a normal westernized Indian dish.

Indian food is always a good idea

What was memorable was the naan bread. The naan breads were delicious and oh so fluffy. Loved every single bite! And you can really tell it’s made in the restaurant instead of the deep frozen stuff from grocery stores. I think that that was definitely the highlight of the meal.

Thoughts

I must say, it was a good meal, but a bit on the expensive side. Even with our coupon for Buy 1 Get 1 free, it still cost us 38EUR (beer, chai, 2 naan breads, lamb vindaloo, and chicken tikka). Without it coupon, it would’ve been 56EUR-ish. But it is good quality, and the naan is one of the best I’ve had so far.
