(Good) Beer helps. Always.
Warpigs was one of the places that I was most excited to show Ave when we planned to go to Copenhagen for the weekend. The restaurant is one of my favourite haunts here in Copenhagen. It is conveniently located in the meat packing where there are many other good restaurant options. I go there not exactly for the food, but definitely for the beer.
Just look at the online description of the place:
AMERICAN BREWERY 3 FLOYDS AND DANISH BREWERY MIKKELLER HAVE BUILT WARPIGS FROM SCRATCH TO HOST TOP AUTHENTIC TEXAS BARBECUE, AMERICAN-DANISH STYLE BREWS AND A COMPLETELY NEW STYLE OF A BEER-LOVING MEMBERSHIP CLUB CALLED WARPIGS TROOPERS. WE ALWAYS 22 BEERS ON TAP; 6 HOUSE BEERS AND 14 THAT WILL KEEP ON SURPRISING, AS WELL AS A BOTTLE, SPIRITS AND WINE LIST THAT WILL KEEP EVERYONE HAPPY DURING THEIR VISIT. OUR BBQ IS TRADITIONAL TEXAN STYLE: SLOW-LOW SMOKED AND DRY RUB SPICED. WE DO SELL OUT OF MEAT MOST NIGHTS SO DON’T COME TOO LATE IF YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE TO TASTE OUR TENDER CUTS.
You cannot tell me that you are not tempted to go after reading that. The place offers way more beers on tap even compared to Mikkeller’s flagship bar.
We decided to go Warpigs for an early dinner since we didn’t have too much food for lunch. Therefore, we arrived at a bit past 5 pm and all the tables were already full. Ordering food is very simple. First, You grab a tray and then you tell the guy behind the counter what you want and how much of it you want. Then, the worker then cuts the meat and plops it down onto your tray. We decided to have 1/4 lb of brisket, 1/2 lb of chicken wings, and 1/2 lb of spare ribs between the two of us.
It’s good American BBQ but it does not compare to what you can get in the States. What I enjoyed the most from the meal was actually the sauce that they provided. The Kansas City sauce was delicious and we couldn’t help but pour more of that onto our tray.
The main attraction was the beers on tap! and there was a choice of 22 different beers.
We ended up getting 9×0,4L of beer between the two of us. Ave got the following
- Lazurite – IPA, but really not that great
- First Resort – Ave’s favourite of the evening
- Booty Call
- Snack Family
And what I had:
- Double Mads Hands – sour, with a hint of passion fruit
- Peach Gose(t) – sourer,
- 3x Zawr Puss – the sourest! Hence I got it three times since it was that good. I love, love, love sour beers and this one hit the spot! The more sour, the better. However, if you do not like sour brews, do not go for this. Most people can’t stand it though.
A good portion of the beers are brewed actually in-house at the back.
Warpigs has a club called “Troppers” for the most dedicated beer lovers. There are quite a few levels in that loyalty club and if you are the General, you are allowed to use this specially set aside room whenever you visit Warpigs. No, I am not a Trooper and neither do I plan to be since it will become way too expensive.
How expensive does it get? I think we ended up spending 700 DKK (~100 EUR) for 9 beers, 1lb of ribs (yes, I got seconds), 1/2 lb of chicken wings, and 1/4 of brisket. Nonetheless, it was a great experience and I’m glad that Ave finally was able to join me here.
Warpigs’ beers never fails to impress me. Therefore, if you enjoy good beers and good accompanying food, I would definitely recommend you check out Warpigs. However, please keep Danish food prices in mind. It will cost you quite a pretty penny but it’s worth it.
